This Privacy Policy explains how Afterward ("the app," "we," "us") collects, uses, and protects your information. Afterward is developed and operated by Emmanuel Narh. If you have questions about this policy or your data, contact us at afterward@emmanuelnarh.org.
Account information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, used to sign you in and manage your account (via Supabase Auth).
Journal content. The core of Afterward is what you write: journal entries, titles, entry types (dream, vision, prayer, sermon note, etc.), and any notes you add about whether something was fulfilled or changed over time. This content is stored securely and is private to your account — no other user can see it, and we don't display it publicly anywhere.
Voice recordings. If you record a voice entry, the audio is processed to generate a text transcript. On the free tier, the audio file is deleted once transcription is complete. If you're a Premium subscriber, you can choose in Settings whether to retain the audio recording alongside the transcript.
AI-generated content. If you use the reflection feature, Afterward generates a short written reflection based on the entry you wrote. This reflection is stored alongside your entry.
Purchase and subscription information. If you subscribe to Premium, our payment processor (Apple, via RevenueCat) shares your subscription status and purchase history with us so we can grant you access to Premium features. We do not see or store your payment card details — those are handled entirely by Apple.
Account identifier. We use an internal user ID (not tied to any public profile) to link your account, entries, and subscription status together, and to identify you to our subscription-management provider (RevenueCat).
Afterward does not use advertising or analytics software of any kind. We do not track you across other apps or websites. We do not collect your location, contacts, photos, or any device data beyond what's technically required to run the app (e.g., your device needing microphone access to record a voice entry). We do not serve ads.
We use your information only to operate the app for you: to create and maintain your account and let you sign in; to store and let you retrieve your journal entries; to transcribe voice entries into text; to generate AI reflections when you request them; to manage your subscription and unlock Premium features; and to respond if you contact us for support.
We do not sell your information to anyone, and we do not use your journal entries or voice recordings to train AI models — ours or anyone else's.
We work with a small number of service providers to run Afterward. Each only receives the specific data it needs to do its job:
| Provider | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Your account email, journal entries, voice recordings/transcripts, and reflections | Database hosting, authentication, and file storage — the backend infrastructure the app runs on |
| OpenAI | The text of an entry, only when you explicitly request an AI reflection or submit a voice recording for transcription | Generates the reflection text or transcript. Your entry text is not used by OpenAI to train their models, per their API data-usage terms in effect at the time of processing |
| RevenueCat | Your internal user ID and subscription status | Manages and verifies your Premium subscription across the App Store |
| Apple | Payment and subscription information, handled entirely within Apple's systems | Processes in-app purchases; we never see your payment details |
We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or any other party.
Before Afterward sends any of your entry text to an AI provider (for a reflection or transcription), we ask for your explicit consent. You can decline and still use Afterward as a private journal without any AI features. If you previously declined, you'll be asked again the next time you choose to generate a reflection.
Your journal entries, reflections, and account information are retained for as long as your account is active. Voice recordings follow the retention rules above (auto-deleted after transcription on the free tier; retained only if you enable that as a Premium subscriber).
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Data & Privacy → Delete account. Deleting your account removes your entries, reflections, voice recordings, and account information from our systems, other than what we're required to retain for legal, security, or fraud-prevention purposes (for example, financial records related to a purchase).
Afterward is rated 4+ on the App Store, but is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us at afterward@emmanuelnarh.org and we will take appropriate action.
We rely on Supabase's infrastructure for authentication and data storage, which includes encryption in transit and at rest, and database-level access rules that restrict every user's data to that user alone. No system is completely immune to risk, but we do not take shortcuts with how your journal — often deeply personal content — is stored and accessed.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or to receive a copy of it. You can already do most of this yourself in the app (view, edit, or delete any entry; delete your account entirely). For anything else, contact afterward@emmanuelnarh.org and we'll help.
If we make material changes to this policy, we'll update the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
